greenmantle "..During the seventies, we were a three piece acoustic harmony band and opened the UCS. Benefit gig at Greens Playhouse on Sun. 30th April, 1972.  We even did an encore, (probably one of very few support bands to do so) also on the bill were- JSD Band, Darryl Adams and Gallagher and Lyle, with Billy Connolly comparing.

We all were supporting Donovan, who it must be said, did not enamour himself with any of us, and was very aloof and wouldn't not let any of the support acts use his pa. system.  We all used Gallagher and Lyle's.  The other members of Greenmantle were Jack Law and Ian Campbell. The gig was organised to raise funds for the Upper Clyde Shipbuilding yard. The workers had staged a sit in at the yard and were on strike for a long time, so this was one of the ways of helping out the workforce who badly needed help. Jimmy Reid was the works convener at the time.
There is also a great story which has been backed up by many people about a stranger arriving at the yard gates the day before the gig, and handing in an envelope and a dozen red roses.  Inside the envelope, was a cheque for £5,000, the man asked for it to be kept quiet, he was given two tickets for the concert and he left.  He did go to the concert incognito.

The stranger was none other than the man himself, John Lennon. He was very much into the socialist movement; wish I had known at the time.

Anyway back to Greenmantle; Ian left the band later at the end of 1972, Jack and I carried on as a two piece.  On Friday the 11th of October 1974, we opened the show for Wishbone Ash, at the Apollo, we even did an encore then as well. It was a great night.

We formed into a four piece in 1975 and had a single out on the Philips label called  “terminal.”  We disbanded early 1977, and I kept gigging with different bands up till about two years ago when I got a call from my old friend Benny Gallagher, (Galagher & Lyle), asking me to play some gigs with him so I have been doing that.  We have also worked with Jim Diamond, and JJ. Gilmour (ex silencers,) we are doing a few things in Dec 05, and the Celtic Connections in Jan 06, then a tour is being arranged for the spring.

Once again it’s great to see somebody taking an interest in the life times of the Apollo, and making It available on the web, hope my information is of use to you and look forward to keeping up to speed with your project..."

"..I do remember playing there and I saw the Stiff Tour there, David Bowie, Roxy Music with Brian Eno, The Osmonds. Well it was an amazing feeling playing there, better than the Albert Hall.."Rose McDowall © Peter McArthur

Stephen Singleton "..ABC looked forward to playing venues like the Apollo in Glasgow because of the great tradition for fantasic music events in rock history. We had heard that the crowds in Glasgow were totally into the music.

I remember the crowd being right with us from the start and we played a great show, great to us was enjoying the music and the reactions from the crowd. I seem to remember that the stage was a high one.

Afterwards we were mobbed in the street and spent about an hour signing autographs, the mob of fans being controlled by a friendly glasgow police man.."

"..Long time ago but I do remember a little bit about it (Gathering of The Clans 1982)

If my memory serves me well then I think the bouncers were going to 'bash' us up because I gobbed out to the audience but it didn't reach them ,instead it landed on one of the bouncers head...he was not happy so he passed the word to all the others to sort us out!...Wattie ( of The Exploited ) came in to us during our encore and told us what was going down....so we did what all proud Englishmen did...we ran off!...after our second encore, we were in the van (which was waiting with the engine running just outside the backstage door)and we were up the road while the clapping was still ringing in our ears......oh the fun of the road.."

LEO SAYER 1975 "..It was the best and toughest gig I ever played.  The Glasgow audience always let you know where you stood.  With the Apollo chorus on my side, I think I played my finest ever concerts there..."
