My first ever gig. The Cocteau Twins were the support, Liz Fraser slamming a tambourine against her breast while mumbling her made-up lyrics, strangely hypnotic. I remember being in the very front row of the upper circle (quite scary) you could feel the movement when everyone was bouncing. OMD came on with their semiphore mimes, submarine sounds and speak and spell machines and from that day on I was hooked. Andy McCluskey and his epileptic dancing, the three minute ovations for Maid of Orleans, what seemed like an endless amount of encores. Brilliant. They don't do them like that anymore. I must have been sitting (or standing) just a few rows behind you!-as I was in the upper circle near the front also. Amazing show,I remember it well. I have been to a few OMD shows since then including "Junk Culture" the year after but this was by far the best of them all (the stage sets were never quite as good after Dazzle Ships). I was only 14 at the time and can remember my excitement at seeing my favourite band in the flesh for the first time-Awesome gig, Awesome venue!..I got a reply from Andy McCluskey in an OMD forum a while back and he says the Apollo was one of his all time favourite venues. [reply]   Re:OMD - amir mirza - 28/02/2004 17:14:09 GMT bloody hell, this was my fist concert too. yes, amazing set, great sound and a wonderful perfomance. they were late coming on, about an hour or so. made the build up that much more exciting. i was about a quarter of the way up the stalls. the junk culture tour the year after was ok but no where near the dazzle ships experience.
